You’ll Never Forget the First Time You Saw the Northern Lights
On October 14, 2017 by wanderstoriesI was staying at an inn near Skaftafell (on the east coast of Iceland). I’ve had plenty of wake-up calls in my life, but never an “Aurora Wake-Up Call” – which we of coursed opt-into.
Before retiring, we had a quick bite – too bad I barely had a spoonful of my kjotsupa (Icelandic lamb stew) before the alarm sounded. Incoming aurora!
Always prepared, I thankfully had my camera and tripod at the ready and took off for the ridge behind the inn.
The second I stepped out into the frigid night, there it was… stealing my breath and forever imprinting in my memory.
Throughout the remainder of the night we stirred about every 2 hours for the incoming auroras. We’d quickly jump out of bed, throw on our boots, and head for the door. What a sight seeing door after door shoot open down the long hallway with their occupants sleepily stumbling outside still trying to get their arms into their coats and their hats on their head.
While certainly not the most restful night I’ve ever had, it remains one of the most memorable
