Snacks on a Plane
On May 19, 2016 by wanderstoriesI’m never one to judge someone on saving a few dollars where they can so completely understand when travelers forgo the outrageously priced airport food, opting to pack a snack from home instead.
Unfortunately, on our trip to Bali my brother learned the hard way that there are limits to brown-bagging it.
To be fair, this was his first overseas trip. Sure, he’d been to the Caribbean, Canada, etc – but hardly counted himself as a world traveler. Its probably also worthwhile to note that hes only recently branched out from the world-class cuisine of chicken nuggets and PB&J sandwiches.
All of this in mind, it was absolutely no surprise that he wanted to bring along some snacks on our trip to Bali. We were going to be gone a month and he just wasn’t sure about the food overseas yet (NOTE: 4 weeks later, the kid was eating his weight in nasi goreng).
Little did I know what he meant by “some snacks”
On our way to Bali, we landed at a layover in Taiwan and are going through security when our group is stopped and flagged for additional screening. My brother’s bag was set to the side where a very helpful security agent advised us he needed to review the contents.
The agent unzips the bag and begins pulling box after box, carton after carton of snacks out of my brother’s suitcase. Oreos. Frito Lays. Cheese Crackers. Chips Ahoy cookies. Sun Chips. Chex Mix. On and on it went.
NEARLY THE ENTIRE SUITCASE IS FILLED WITH SNACKS. The entire time the agent is silent.
Finally the agent finds the culprit – the giant, 100+ pack, box of gummy fruit snacks at the bottom. He opens the box and proceeds to pull out one of the individually wrapped bags and finally says… “What are these?”
My brother answers that they’re fruit snacks he brought from home.
I should note that this entire time my family is in stitches at the sheer amount of food my brother thought was necessary. We’re talking doomsday prepper, Costco gold membership amount of snacks. So its no surprise when the agent says they want to test one of the packs and they take one into the back room.
It was only a short time later that the agent returned notifying us that we were free to leave.
Honestly? I think someone just wanted a mid-shift snack.
